There is nothing more exciting than walking through the front door and being welcomed by a delicious, refreshing, yet spicy fragrance of the feeling of Christmas from some fresh simmering potpourri!

Here’s an incredibly easy recipe that is so easy to modify and can costs upwards of nothing! For a couple bucks you can really bring the spirit of Christmas and make your home smell so sooo good!

I personally find the below potpourri recipe to be my favourite combo, but there are so many ways you can edit this to suit your liking! The citrus can be so varied – oranges can be replaced with clementine, lemon, or lime. Rosemary can be swapped with pine (in my case I use both), but I’d default to rosemary since it has a really strong scent; or bay leaves make for a nice alternative!

I wouldn’t omit the cranberries, but I would leave it totally up to you how many you want to use. The more, the sweeter I find the smell. As for the spices, you can even boil just powdered cinnamon vs. sticks or ground cloves vs. the whole pieces.

Lastly, don’t stress the proportions, these carry so well, so even the smallest amount goes such a long way!

The Perfect Christmas Potpourri
Ingredients
- 1 orange (see notes)
- 2-4 sticks cinnamon
- 1 tsp cloves
- ⅓ cup cranberries (see notes)
- 1 tsp anise (2-4 stars)
- 2 sprigs rosemary (see notes)
Instructions
- Fill a pot with water.
- Add your ingredients.
- Simmer on low for 3-4 hours for as long as you'd like!
Notes
- You can easily swap the citrus: lime, lemon, orange, clementine, tangerine. All of these will work! The citrus zesty scent just adds a zing.
- Cranberries add just a touch of sweetness, you can use just a small handful, or an entire cup depending on if you like the smell of berries.
- Rosemary works beautifully, but for a cheaper alternative bay leaves (4-5) or pine stems (just 2 will work wonders).
