How to Decorate a Hygge Themed Christmas Tree

November 23, 2021

This year, I wanted to focus on a more simplified, yet moody Christmas tree setup. I love having red and gold, but I needed a bit of a break from the overload of colours, so I decided on a more muted and calming tree this year. What better theme than Hygge?

If you want to check out a more classic Red, Gold, and White theme, check out my post from last year.

This year the real showstoppers will be coming in the next week or so, where I show you how to wrap presents.

Some core elements of Hygge

Lots of fairy lights. I simplified the greenery this year, but went ham on the starry lights.

Another is natural elements and textures like wood, wool, and yummy treats – hence the gingerbread!

The key to decorating a gingerbread tree…well, it’s gingerbread. I have a foolproof recipe you can check out here. It’s what I ended up using to make some gingerbread men and houses to adorn the tree.

I really wanted the tree to mainly focus on whites, browns, and a tiny splash of red, so I started with that exact order.

White eats up the most visual real estate, so I added the big bulky elements first. Then I moved onto the browns (gingerbread men, houses, wood snowflakes, and my wood bead garland). Lastly I popped on some small red accents so that I wasn’t in full neutral territory.

So here it is, my slightly Scandinavian inspired Hygge Christmas tree!

It’s warm and inviting, and doesn’t look too heavy on the eyes alongside the more simple elements I added this year.

These gorgeous baubles I scored from Canadian Tire, and just tied up to a simple little greenery arrangement. Might add a DIY tutorial for it later 😛 Can’t decide yet!

The stunning deer pillow I actually snagged from Homesense, so I’m sorry there’s no links. However, the absolutely gorgeous white print pillow is from Terra Greenhouses. Don’t walk, RUN! This one is just too pretty to pass up and matches everything!

Of course it wouldn’t by Hygge without some candles and warm elements in the living room. Sadly, since I need to toddler-proof everything I can’t fill this tray with too much so it’s a little more airy this year.

Let me know what you think! If you have Christmas trees to share, link them to me in the comments! I love to see your creations~
