How to Make the Cutest DIY Beeswax Wraps

March 9, 2021

My resolution this year was to do my best at reducing my waste and live a little more sustainably, so naturally when I saw a beeswax wrap selling for $11 per wrap, I went a little woozy and thought twice about how realistic my goal was for my wallet.

Here's an easy, 3-step DIY guide for making your own beeswax wraps for a fraction of the cost in store! All you need is cloth, wax, wax paper, and an iron!

Needless to say, after doing some research, I found that making these babies is SO darn easy! However, word of caution – read the instructions. Don’t be me. READ ‘EM!

My first attempt at these was absolutely horrible. Wax was everywhere, and I had to toss 2 cookie sheets and unclog my drain and scour my countertop to just get rid of the traces of beeswax everywhere…

So instead, do yourself a favor, and read the easy 3 step process for this! That way you don’t ruin your baking sheets, or your counters, or anything else for that matter!

You’ll need:

  1. Wax paper
  2. Beeswax (pre-shredded or grated)
  3. Cloth (you can use any material, but I find thin cotton works best). This is what I ordered.
  4. Iron

Step 1: Layers

You’ll want to start by layering wax paper, cloth of choice, and shredded wax bits (I used my old wax grater – though you could use your regular food grater too, it’s just tedious to clean out), and then layer wax paper on top again.

Step 2: Ironing

Using the lowest iron setting, and starting from the middle (make sure to hold down, then lift a couple times in a few spots before using ironing motions, so the wax adheres and doesn’t move the whole project). Then proceed to push the beeswax around underneath the wax paper with the iron, you’ll see quickly that it melts and becomes easy to squish the liquid wax around.

Step 3: Peel Off

Lastly, you just peel off the wax paper from the top and bottom, and allow the wax to cool for a few minutes. If you missed any spots, you can always sprinkle more wax and iron again (but beware, because the wax paper becomes harder to peel off every time you do this).

Pro Tips

  1. I highly recommend using a zigzag or very sharp decorative scissor to cut the edges of the wax (that way you aren’t going to see any fraying long-term).
  2. For every new cloth, use new wax paper – the more you reuse it, the more it adheres to the cloth and becomes difficult to remove.
  3. If your wax wraps have lost wax over time, you can easily refresh them with some fresh wax and repeating the above process.
  4. For easy care, just wash with cold water!
