This is an easy guide for decorating your porch for the Fall season! I’ve always dreamt of having one of those “Pinterest-Worthy” front porches, but every year without fail something would get in the way. My mums would dry up, or the buds would still be closed, my rug wouldn’t look as cozy as I wanted, or the pumpkins we got wouldn’t match my wreath. But this year, I said to hell with all those years, time to make my porch shine!
I can’t tell you how incredibly EASY it actually is to do. Once I planned out my items, it was a breeze to get it all together.
The components: Wreath, Rug, Mums, Pumpkins.
The Wreath
So the wreath has become a tradition for my mom and I to make. We would get a bunch of random floral stems and a wide ribbon from the dollar store and Michael’s and just spend one afternoon building up our wreaths. However, obviously you are so welcome to buy them from the store. There are SO many stunning designs; for me I just found that the cost was a little crazy, and I’m perfectly happy with my $25~ dollar spend on wreath supplies.
The Rug
I finally splurged and purchased the checkered plaid underlay to use for our coir entry mats. This is the one I picked from Amazon. Although it’s $30, I figured not only are the reviews great, but it’s versatile to be used for any season. There’s a lovely variety at Bed Bath and Beyond, Terra Gardens (where mine is from), and Amazon.
The Mums
Of course, you can’t have a fall porch without planters or baskets of mums! I originally picked these when they were buds and they looked like they’d be red, but alas nature had a surprise and I got orange! I think they go even better with my wreath this way.
P.S. Much like the welcome sign, no soliciting board, the bunny is a special little addition to all our porch decorations. We keep him year round, because kids often think he’s real and it just cheers people up when they see him.
The Pumpkins
Lastly, it isn’t fall without pumpkins! Now you can go totally Pinterest-level crazy and have a thousand of these layered at the front. It looks so luxurious and gorgeous! However, if you’re like me where a) you don’t want to have to dispose of a thousand pumpkins later, and b) have a simple and small porch, then 6-8 various size and textured pumpkins is the way to go!
I chose primarily orange tones, though there are beautiful reds and blues out there to pick from. Some lovely varieties are the Fairytale pumpkins (as you can see, lumpy peachy toned one), Knucklehead (the one with lumpy wart-like additions), and the simple white classic pumpkins.
So there you have it! The easiest way to spruce up your front porch, just by adding a few elements to it. I’d say the whole project cost me under $100, and that’s including the $25~ on the wreath last year, $30 on the underlay for the rug that will be reused, $15 on the coir rug, and the actual mums and pumpkins were on an amazing deal at Terra Greenhouse and Sobeys. Now that I have the staples, next year this can be recreated with even less spendings, because I’ll be re-using the wreath, the rug underlay, and I refuse to buy anything that’s not on a deal!
